Gladys Mwaka
Marine Science Educator
Ms. Gladys Mwaka is a research scientist at the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI), with a background in industrial microbiology, biotechnology, and a master's degree in world fisheries from Pukyong University in South Korea. Her research interests include the management and governance of aquatic systems, coastal marine and freshwater, and the utilization of the blue economy potential. She has been involved in different projects aimed at enhancing livelihoods through fish farming and was recently appointed head of community stakeholder training along the Kenya coastal line. Gladys has contributed to the development of fish cage culture, alternative seaweed farming, and other culture systems, which have the potential of improving livelihoods of the local communities in line with exploitation of the blue economy. She has authored several scientific publications and served in various capacities as a consultant and virtual instructor. In addition to her research work, Gladys also represents the Ocean Youth Academy (OYA) in Kenya and helps the organization to educate youth about our global marine ecosystems.
