The Polar Oceans
 A Virtual Expedition Course

Experience the beauty and wonder of the polar regions through the lens of Andy the Arctic Tern on this immersive 10 session virtual expedition course. Andy spends his years traveling from pole to pole in search of the never-ending polar summer, making him the longest migrating species on the planet!

Join us as we learn more about these wild and magical landscapes through a carefully selected set of 10 polar-themed topics with Andy as our guide, hitting on a variety of NGSS science standards along the way.

During this course, you’ll hear firsthand stories of travels to the Arctic and Antarctic, complete fun and educational activities, watch videos, and talk with real polar experts about what makes these locations so special and important to humans around the world.

OYA's Virtual Classroom

Picture
With the current state of our education systems teetering between at-home virtual learning and in-person classroom education, OYA’s mission is to provide supporting ocean-science themed, educational materials to supplement the science curriculum already established at each school.

OYA works directly with schools and teachers to develop content that best fits the unique needs of each classroom. OYA’s marine science educational curriculum is created using cutting-edge virtual platforms. Our content includes specific NGSS or STEM standards built into each lesson in order to enhance student learning outcomes and maximize engagement.

What OYA Offers For Your Students

All of OYA’s virtual content is created and presented on an interactive e-learning platform. OYA uses a platform called Thinkific to host our content. However, we are easily able to adapt our courses to specific learning management systems used at your school (e.g., Google Classroom, Canvas, Blackboard etc.). Our content is dynamic and is purposefully designed to be easily adapted to your students and your school’s curricular needs.

Our programs can be designed to target learning outcomes in quantitative and qualitative reasoning, analytic and aesthetic discernment, reading comprehension, oral comprehension, and writing skills, among others.
Course work can also include at-home labs that students can complete using traditional household items to consolidate learning and make it applicable to the students’ lived experience. Most content is pre-recorded, however, live sessions are available upon request.

OYA is dedicated to creating dynamic content for individual school districts, educational institutions, and classrooms. Our organization can provide learning materials for short modules, week-long projects, or longer-term dynamic curriculum to best fit your school needs to help your students succeed.

How OYA Supports Teachers

Picture
OYA provides virtual teacher training before the content is delivered. During this training, OYA’s team of expert educators explains how the content is structured and how teachers can make the best use of their included supplemental materials.

OYA also has a dedicated educational representative available throughout the content-delivery period to help teachers handle any technological issues, questions, or concerns.

Growth-Oriented Learning From Start To Finish

To help us assess our organization’s success at facilitating quality student experiences, OYA regularly solicits feedback from educators, parents, educational institutions, and students, particularly at the end of the course. We are always looking for ways to improve and expand our content to help all students achieve their highest learning potential.

A Track Record Of Success

OYA was founded in May 2020 and quickly got to work creating exceptional educational programming. Our first partnership was with Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) in summer 2020 to create a virtual summer learning module for elementary school students. The module, aptly named Junior Polar Explorers, was co-created by OYA educators and LAUSD teachers.

Junior Polar Explorers incorporated the following key components into a single learning experience for over 2000 students in LAUSD:

  • Content created to meet NGSS Math & Science Standards
  • Interactive art projects
  • Self-study learning tools to enhance vocabulary
  • Student online journal/workbooks
  • No-cost at-home science projects
  • Supporting documents and resources for teachers

"EVERYONE was talking about the Polar Explorers.  I know someone who taught the curriculum, a student who participated in the program (hated zooming with her regular class but had her mom sign in to zoom with her summer class while on a bike ride) and a parent who said it was like “Goldilocks finding porridge…this one was juuuuust right!” - Anonymous

Current Projects

OYA is collaborating with a homeschool organization to create a 12-week virtual-learning module on Polar Oceans. This module will be OYA’s very own unique curriculum and will be interactive and led by OYA’s very own polar explorers and marine biologists. All content will:
  • Be created to meet NGSS Math & Science Standards
  • Be presented through the lens of an Arctic Tern
  • Incorporate Interactive art projects
  • Have self-study learning tools to enhance vocabulary
  • Invite students to use online journal/workbooks
  • Bring in no-cost at-home science projects
  • Provide supporting documents and resources for teachers
  • Award a certificate of completion
  • Ask for a stakeholder assessment at the completion of the course
